Exoskeletons for Construction: Which Model for Which Job?

Exoleton 22/03/2026

Practical guide to choosing an exoskeleton suitable for construction jobs: mason, plumber, electrician, painter, roofer. Assisted areas, criteria, and recommendations.

The Construction Sector: A High-Strain Industry

The construction and public works sector accounts for a significant share of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in France. Lifting heavy loads, bent postures, overhead work: physical constraints vary by job, but the impact on the body is systematic.

Job-Specific Constraints

Mason / Formworker / Reinforcer

  • Lifting heavy loads (blocks, bags of cement, rebar)
  • Prolonged bending and stooped postures
  • Intense strain on the back and lower back

Recommended exoskeleton: passive dorsal with lifting assistance. Priority on lightweight and compatibility with safety harness.

Electrician / Drywaller / Painter

  • Prolonged overhead work (wiring, ceiling painting, panel installation)
  • Strain on shoulders, deltoids, and trapezius
  • Cervical tension

Recommended exoskeleton: arm/shoulder assistance (passive). Must be compatible with helmets and not hinder technical movements at height.

Plumber / Heating Technician

  • Bent postures in confined spaces
  • Frequent bending under sinks, in attics
  • Lifting heavy tools

Recommended exoskeleton: ultra-light passive dorsal (< 1 kg) that does not hinder movement in confined spaces.

Roofer / Carpenter

  • Lifting heavy materials at height
  • Bent postures on roofs
  • Need for complete freedom of movement

Recommended exoskeleton: passive dorsal compatible with fall protection harness. Lightness is critical.

Specific Criteria for Construction

  • Robustness: dusty, humid, outdoor environment
  • PPE Compatibility: helmet, harness, vest, safety shoes
  • Washability: textile exoskeletons can be washed, not rigid structures
  • Quick Donning: on-site, every minute counts
  • Versatility: an operator often changes tasks throughout the day
